It’s time to escape the heat wave for another float trip on the Sangamon, heading upriver to Sangamon River Forest Preserve and paddling to “Riverwood”, home of your River Runners Captain. This will be a trip with known hazards and blockages; at least 2 that will require portage. The trip takes us through the new CCFPD Heron View Forest Preserve and under the Historic Hazen Bridge.
Arrive at the Sangamon River Forest Preserve parking lot (Map) by 9:00 AM, and you can catch a return ride back from Riverwood at the end.
You may park at the takeout, Riverwood (Map) , and catch a ride up to SRFP for departure. If you are bringing your own watercraft, you would need to drop it at SRFP before that, or arrive at Riverwood early to load it on the trailer. Drivers will depart Riverwood by 8:30 AM.
The River Runners are a group of USRC paddlers who are familiar with paddling on the Sangamon River and know basic watercraft safety. River Runners know how to maneuver paddlecraft on moving water and around obstacles which mostly include logs and trees. River Runners must be able to handle sometimes challenging portages and have knowledge of river currents including siphons which can trap and capsize watercraft under fallen trees. Good knowledge and training are essential to a safe Sangamon River experience.
