Lake of the Woods
Mussel survey on Saturday, September 5 at Lake of the Woods, scheduled for a 9am meet time at the Izaak Walton cabin. The USRC will provide lunch immediately following the survey (participation optional, of course). The survey portion of the event will finish about noon. If you are interested in volunteering, please respond to this email or contact Bruce Colravy at 369-5376 (evenings please).
No experience is required to participate. Even if you are a novice musseler the Lake of the Woods survey is perfect for you. Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We have had volunteers in the past ranging from children to seniors. You will get the opportunity to search for freshwater mussels, learn about their unique life cycle, and learn how to identify them. We have some “dry” duties for those who wish to participate, but prefer not to take part in the in-water search. Please inform me if you prefer this option when you respond to this email.
What to expect. For those who take part in the mussel search, you will be in the water, likely seated or on your hands and knees while combing your hands through the substrate; using you sense of touch to uncover mussels. A few mussels may be spotted visually as well, but generally not very many. You should expect to get soaked and muddy, therefore old clothes and old tennis shoes are recommended, and a change of clothes for greater comfort at the cook-out and for the ride home. I personally recommend long pants for the mussel search.
